U.N. force deploys to prevent attacks on Sudanese refugees in CAR
DAKAR (AlertNet) - U.N. peacekeepers have deployed to a town in the north east of Central African Republic (CAR) to deter attacks on Sudanese refugees from a rebel group, a U.N. spokesman has said.

The rebel group called the Union of Democratic Forces for Unity (UFDR) has accused refugees of killing some of their fighters and triggering insecurity in the region around the town of Sam Ouandja, almost 950km (590 miles) from the capital Bangui.

Action urgently needed to avert food crisis in west Africa says Oxfam
DAKAR (AlertNet)- Time is running out to tackle a massive loss of livestock in west Africa that could heighten existing food insecurity and push thousands into poverty, Oxfam International has said.

Erratic rainfall in Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali and northern Nigeria has caused a drop in fodder estimated at 60 to 80 percent in some countries.

115,000 flee ethnic violence in north-western DRC
DAKAR (AlertNet) - Raging ethnic violence in north-western Democratic Republic of Congo has now driven 115,000 people from their homes and forced aid agencies to put their work in the region on hold.

The sporadic fighting - unrelated to simmering rebel violence in the mineral-rich east - erupted between two tribes, Enyele and Munzaya, in the village of Dongo in Equateur province at the end of October and has since killed more than 100 people.

Aid groups retreat to Central African Republic's capital for safety
DAKAR, (AlertNet) - Several international aid groups operating in north eastern Central African Republic (CAR) have asked their staff to retreat to the capital Bangui after recent clashes between rebels and government forces and the abduction of a number of aid workers, humanitarian officials have said.

November was a difficult month for relief agencies working in CAR with two aid workers of the France-based Triangle organisation kidnapped in Birao, about 800 km (500 miles) from Bangui.

Food crisis looms around eastern Sahel in Africa -WFP
Several million people are likely to face a serious food crisis next year in West Africa's eastern Sahel region notably in Chad and Niger , the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has said.

Late and erratic rainfall in September and October, a period critical to crop development, has meant there will be a shortfall of food in this region that is between the Sahara desert and the forest parts of sub saharan Africa.
